Take a jab at a guy’s manhood and you may find yourself clinging to self help books to resurrect your friendship or relationship. Manhood is broadly described as the “qualities of manliness” – which range from grunting and growling as they proudly take on chores at home to jacked up muscles and MPS (male pride syndrome).
Physiologists look at manhood on a biochemical level by measuring levels of androgens (male hormones; testosterone is an example of an androgen). Natural androgens influence the development of the male reproductive system in men. Synthetic androgens are best known for making men more muscular, being whipped up in Balco labs years ago and taking up some quality space in the Mitchell Report.
It’s no secret that we can manipulate the levels of various hormones in our body through our food intake and physical activity (training). Bodybuilders are masters at doing this and incorporate strategies of nutrient timing to help them get {grunt} big. But a recent study showed something that many bodybuilders have known all along – sugar can make or break you depending on when you take it. In this particular study, researchers gave 74 men (42 with normal blood sugar and 23 with impaired blood sugar regulation and 9 with type 2 diabetes) a drink containing 75 grams of glucose (a common sugar) then measured their circulating levels of testosterone. They found that the post-meal spike in blood sugar due to glucose intake could cut a man’s level of circulating testosterone by about 1/4. This trend of low testosterone continued for 2 hours after the test. All men, regardless of whether they had normal blood sugar levels, impaired blood sugar regulation or pre-diabetes showed the same results.
What does this mean for you? If you decide to get your hormone levels tested, do so on an empty stomach. In addition, consider how much sugar you consume during the day and save the sweets for during- and post-workout (resistance training) and post-workout (aerobic exercise).
Happy Father’s Day weekend to all.
