Is Your Drinking Bottle Increasing Your Estrogen Levels?

Many people pay close attention to what they eat and some even consider when they are eating or how their food is prepared. But, few consider what they eat and drink from. Yet these containers could carry a chemical that disrupts normal cell function by acting like estrogen in your body. Men, you aren’t excluded! If you are looking for man boobs, here’s your answer – start sipping out of hard, reusable plastic bottles that don’t say “BPA free.”

Though the FDA considers bisphenol-A safe in doses consumed by humans, a recently released study published in Environmental Health Perspectives didn’t ease my feelings about this chemical. In this Harvard School of Public Health study, after a washout period, 77 college students were told to consume all cold beverages from polycarbonate bottles for one week. After this time period, urinary BPA concentration increased by an astounding 69%. And, the subjects that reported greater compliance with the protocol showed an even greater association between drink consumption from the bottles and urinary BPA.
What does this mean for you? Toss those old water bottles that are not made from BPA-free plastic. Or, better yet, just buy stainless steel water bottles (even grocery stores sell these now). But, be wary about what you buy because some bottles are coated with a lining that contains BPA (in fact, some canned foods are as well). I like Klean Kanteen because the water tastes better, it is easy to clean and BPA free.
