What the Food Industry Won’t Tell You

Do you ever wonder what is in your food? If you know me, chances are you’ve heard this come out of my mouth “ignorance isn’t bliss.” But when it comes to some of the stuff that goes on in the food industry, I personally take in pieces of information only. As a teenager I was over hotdogs after someone told me that they were made from meat scraps and I gave up pork (eating pig didn’t appeal to me anyway) after microbiology class in college. Needless to say, I really don’t want to think about chickens shot with antibiotics then stuffed into small cages on trucks that make their way across the US in 90 degree heat. If I think about those chickens there are times when I may have no options in the airport or on the road when grilled chicken is a better choice for satiating my appetite then a bed of pesticide-ridden lettuce. I do what works within a relatively healthy range and what is convenient (and I love Moe’s Southwest Grill – fast, convenient, realtively healthy). But for those of you who want to learn more (and especially why HFCS and soybean-everything are prevalent in our food supply), check out this movie: http://www.foodincmovie.com/about-the-film.php. On the righthand side you’ll find a link telling you where it is viewing. And, you can click on Take Action and About the Issues on the top for a wealth of information. It sounds truly fascinating but I think I’ll opt for selective reading versus viewing animals caged up and less-than sanitary conditions in processing plants. Unlike the Hungry Girl I don’t like going hungry and a movie like this may make me starve while I weed through what I want to eat from Whole Foods. I’m sure they present great information but, I’d have to cover my eyes and ears while sinking down in my seat. And I get enough of that and teeth gritting while watching some of my sports teams lose.
